Clipping | Arole Cultural is the newest company supported by the Brazilian Publishers project
Founded in March 2018, Arole Cultural joined the list of companies supported by the Brazilian Publishers, an industry project that promotes exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). The program aims at internationalizing the Brazilian editorial content and encouraging the participation of publishing market professionals in international events and the relationship with professionals from abroad.
Currently, Arole Cultural has 11 active titles in its catalogue and 27 works to be released in 2019. “My great expectation as a publisher of Brazilian Publishers is to take information about African and Afro-Brazilian religions out of the country by returning the identity and dignity that the black people and these religions have lost through the slavery process and the society’s structural racism”, explains the director and founder of the publishing house, Diego de Oxóssi.
Last year, the work that stood out the most was the first volume of the collection “O Livro dos Orixás para Crianças” (The Book of Orixás for Children), which has the objective of presenting the history, customs, characteristics and strength of nature of the Orixás, who are deities belonging African and Afro-Brazilian religions. The work “Conhecendo os Orixás: de Exu a Oxalá” (Knowing the Orixás: from Eshu to Oshala) was released in December 2018 and sold two thousand copies in 30 days.
In March, the publisher will release “Exu, dois amigos e uma luta” (Eshu, Two Friends and a Struggle) in Brazil. “It is essential to talk about the concepts of African-born religions in order to break established paradigms and prejudices, as the Orixa Exu to be mistakenly associated with the Devil”, explains Diego. “The major importance of talking about Exu for children and adults is precisely to inform and end prejudice and religious intolerance”, he says.
Besides the volumes of the children’s collection, the publisher also has in its catalogue the works “Sabedoria de Umbanda” (Wisdom of Umbanda) by Spiritual Leader Alan Barbieri, which brings reflections and lessons about life and spirituality; “A Benção aos Mais Velhos” (The Blessing to the Elder) by Babalorixá Rodney de Oxóssi, which presents the African view of the world that is preserved in the terreiros (temples), and volumes 1 and 2 of the trilogy “As Folhas Sagradas” (The Sacred Leaves), which approaches the use of plants for baths and smoking and teaches to identify and classify leaves and their action power.
